Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Adrenaline (epinephrine) is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, responsible for regulating a variety of bodily functions. When released in relatively large quantities as a result of fear, pain, or other great duress, adrenaline can significantly enhance the body's performance.
The hormone has a number of medical uses, ranging from supplementing anesthesia to treating cardiac arrest. However, outside of a hospital setting, most patients buy adrenaline to treat asthma or to have on-hand in case of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction which can be life-threatening if not treated quickly. In fact, adrenaline is the gold standard for treating anaphylaxis in most parts of the world.
Forms of Administration
Adrenaline is typically available in two forms, depending on intended use; aerosolized in inhalers or nebulizers for asthma, and in injection form for anaphylaxis:
Injected adrenaline, usually in the form of an EpiPen or EpiPen Junior for children, is administered to stop anaphylaxis. Ideally the medication is given at the first symptoms of a severe reaction. Injections should always be delivered in the upper thigh. If symptoms persist and continue to be life-threatening, a second injection should be administered.
Aerosolized adrenaline is also used as-needed for asthma symptoms, but, generally given in much lower doses, may be used more frequently and for less severe symptoms. While inexpensive adrenaline inhalers were once widely available without a prescription, government environmental regulations have since outlawed them in many countries. In some areas it is possible to buy adrenaline as racepinephrine for use in nebulizers instead.
While the preferred delivery methods for the two conditions are different, either treatment may be effective in life-threatening situations where the ideal delivery system is not available. That is, inhaled adrenaline may be somewhat effective on anaphylaxis and the injected form will likely ease a severe asthma attack.
It is unusual, though not unheard of, for a patient to be given a prescription to buy adrenaline in injection form for emergency treatment of severe asthma attacks.
Emergency medical treatment should be sought as soon as possible after adrenaline injection, even if symptoms dissipate.
Warnings & Side Effects
While there are no contraindications regarding adrenaline use in a life-threatening situation, certain conditions do pose a risk of more serious side effects, and longer-lasting side effects of the medication:
Elderly, very young, and pregnant individuals should also seek medical attention after adrenaline use.
Dangerous side-effects are rare in otherwise healthy patients. Effects typically wear off quickly, though they may be alarming to patients unused to adrenaline treatment:
Adrenaline may interact negatively with numerous prescription medications; notably beta blockers, which will significantly reduce adrenaline's effect. Antidepressants, certain antihistamines, and stimulants may increase the severity of side effects. Interactions with this medication can be quite serious, even life-threatening; speak with a doctor about potential interactions if taking any other medications.
